Module 1. Basic course
Information and understanding of the combined heat and power-system as a unified whole from the end-user to the production. In VEKS’ system the main producers are the co-generation plant Avedøreværket and the incineration plants KARA and Vestforbrændingen.
The target group is the board of directors and technical/administrative staff members in the local district heating companies.
Module 2. Basic technical course
Information about the energy economy - including the meaning of an efficient end-user system.
The participants in the course will get information about efficiency and energy economy in production, transmission, distribution and end-user systems.
The course is the pre-requisite for the other more detailed modules 3-17
Module 3. Evaluation of user systems
The participants in the course will be better qualified to evaluate user systems - new as well as existing ones.
There will be instruction in buildings’ heat demands and heat loss.
Information will be given about how to calculate radiator-size with respect to the heat demand, the supply temperature and the required cooling.
The participants will be better qualified to evaluate the end-user systems’ ability to provide satisfactory district heating taking into account low temperature and high cooling.
Practical exercises on end-user systems are included in the course.
Module 4. Domestic Water-systems
The participants will be better qualified to evaluate hot domestic water-systems - both new and existing ones, and will be instructed in domestic water demand.
What is the relationship between the size of the domestic water production-system and the domestic water demand, the supply temperature and the cooling requirements?
The course includes practical exercises on end-user domestic water-systems.
Module 5. Components
The objectives is to evaluate the use of various components.
The use and dimension of valves, heat exchangers, hot-water tanks, presure conditions in heat-systems and thermovalves.
Information about the conditions which are important for the functioning of the components, Kv-value and P-string.
The participants will get theoretical and practical knowledge about the importance of the role of the “little“ district heating company compared to the whole system.
Module 6. Automatic components
The aim is to evaluate the use of different automatic components - along with general teaching on heat control equipment.
The participants will get information about automation in the end-user systems, and about buildings’ heat demands to ensure optimum use of the automation.
Module 7. Energy controll systems
The participants will get information about the use of energy-management systems within district heating systems, and about background to and importance of energy management.
Distant reading of meters and key-numbers are other subjects in this course.
The participants will be able to guide the end-users in establishing energy-management systems.
Module 8. Operation of user-systems
The participants will be able to evaluate the condition of the user-system by using check-lists/description of symptons.
Information about causes and effects of the most common operational problems are included in the course.
There will be information about operation control and adjustment of the various components in an end-user system.
The course includes practical exercises in the use of symptoms descriptions, checklists for operation, maintenance, servicesystems and active trouble shooting.
Module 9: Ventilation
Many ventilation systems are far from economical. Merely by changing the operational routines will it be possible to gain large savings. The physical design of the system also has a significant bearing on energy consumption. Module 9 provides instructions in the theories of ventilation systems, and you can work with various types of systems in the laboratory. You receive a very instructive compendium, which may subsequently be used as a reference manual.
Module 12. End-user module
This is a complementary module for employees by the major end-users. It is a user-defined course offered as a supplement to the subjects covered in module 2.
Module 13. Tuning-up
The water distribution is the aim of this course, which includes practical exercises in tuning-up central heating installations.
Module 14. Module in readiness
The participants will be instructed in risk-matters related to the operation of district heating systems.
The course includes practical exercises in fire-fighting, emergency treatment, etc.
Module 15. First Aid
First Aid provision in the work place can save lives. It can prevent minor problems or Injuries from becoming major ones. Every workplace present both health and safety risks which might require First Aid. This course provides the participants both practise and theoretical knowledge in First Aid and Fire fighting.
After the course the participants will get a personal certificate that documents you as a qualified First Aider.
Module 16. Updating First Aid
This course offers the participants the opportunity to be updated in the First Aid disciplines learned in module 15.The period of validity of the certificate from module 15 is two years, so this course gives the opportunity to renew it. This course also include practice in fire fighting.
Module 17. Building construction
Due to Danish legislation all district heating companies shall be able to give their end-users advices in how to save energy. In this course the participants will learn how houses are constructed and which elements that are important to focus on - in the effort to save energy. Furthermore there will be examples from reforming of apartment houses.
The teaching is covered by VEKS, CFT, AVV, tac, JOS-Consult, Greve Strandby District Heating Company, VIBO, KAB and Korsør Brand- og Redningsskole.
In the courses the trainees use a very comprehensive compendium which can later be used as a tool in the participants daily work. Participation potential
The potential participants are employed in the local district heating companies in VEKS’ supply-area. The potential number of participants is approximately 125.
The other potential participants are employees of the major end-users. The potential number is at least the same.
It is the local district heating companies who enroll the participants in the courses. Financial conditions
The course price is only 250 DKK for each course day. The other costs are financed by funds for the energy consultant function. The real costs per course day range from 225 to 2,265 DKK. State of affairs
VEKS in-service training programme started in the autumn 1993. Since then, the courses have been completed every year. The number of participants pr. course is normally between 7 and 12, except course number 1, 15 and 16 which have an upper limit of 20.
In the autumn 2006 the total number of participants is more than 2,100.
Training Programme for service-Staff
In the year 2005 VEKS established four new courses. The target group is members of the service staff in the cooperative housing societies. The new courses are a so called “light” edition of the VEKS in-service training programme. The course price is 300 DKK for each course day.
The new courses have been a great success. At the end of 2006 the total number of participants was 105.
